#2. Attend One of the Accredited Cosmetology Schools in Alaska
Soon after you’ve been accepted to a beauty academy, you’ll start attending school. The Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers requires you to finish 1,650 hours of training at an accredited cosmetology college before applying for your license.
#3. Pass the Alaska Cosmetology State Board Exam
Once you’ve completed the required training hours, you’ll need to take the official Alaska Cosmetology State Board Exam. This will consist of a theory exam and a practical exam. The fee for both exams is $95.

But in order to get your license, you need to:
- Provide proof of attending an accredited cosmetology school for the required number of hours.
- Submit a Notarized Application for Hairdresser License.
- Pay a total of $315 to the State of Alaska. (This covers the application, licensure, and exam fees.)

In Alaska, you need to renew your license every other year (odd-numbered years) by August 31st. It costs $140 to renew a basic cosmetology license.
At this time, Alaska doesn’t require any continuing education during the renewal period. However, it can be a good idea to go back to school part-time to get a more advanced license.
The price of the Alaska cosmetology license renewal increases to $180 if you miss the deadline.
Cosmetology License Transfer in Alaska
If you want to transfer your cosmetology license from another state, then you’ll need to contact the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers directly. They review each application on a case-by-case basis.

- If you have a minimum of 1,500 cosmetology school hours from your home state, then you can substitute one year of licensed work experience to make up the missing 150 hours.
- Or, if you come from your home state with only 1,000 cosmetology school hours, then you can use two years of licensed work experience to equal the missing 650 hours.
- If you don’t have the number of training hours and work experience listed above, you’ll need to take classes at a cosmetology school in Alaska.
