And now, here’s a quick bullet-point list of the steps you must take in order to become a cosmetologist in Alaska.

#1. Search for the Best Cosmetology Programs Near Me in Alaska

Your first step is to find the best cosmetology academy for you. This will depend on factors such as cost, class schedules, location, and how long their cosmetology program takes to complete. It’s all about figuring out what you want and making sure the school has what you want.

For example, if you are currently working during the day, you’ll need to find a cosmetology school with night classes.

#2. Attend One of the Accredited Cosmetology Schools in Alaska

Soon after you’ve been accepted to a beauty academy, you’ll start attending school. The Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers requires you to finish 1,650 hours of training at an accredited cosmetology college before applying for your license.

#3. Pass the Alaska Cosmetology State Board Exam

Once you’ve completed the required training hours, you’ll need to take the official Alaska Cosmetology State Board Exam. This will consist of a theory exam and a practical exam. The fee for both exams is $95.

You’ll need to pass both tests in order to be approved for your cosmetology license. But don’t worry! Your cosmetology classes will help prepare you for the test, and we’re also here to help.

#4. Apply for Your License

Once you’ve passed the exam, you’ll be eligible for your license and the fun can begin!

But in order to get your license, you need to:

  • Provide proof of attending an accredited cosmetology school for the required number of hours.
  • Submit a Notarized Application for Hairdresser License.
  • Pay a total of $315 to the State of Alaska. (This covers the application, licensure, and exam fees.)

 Cosmetology License Renewal in Alaska

In Alaska, you need to renew your license every other year (odd-numbered years) by August 31st. It costs $140 to renew a basic cosmetology license.

At this time, Alaska doesn’t require any continuing education during the renewal period. However, it can be a good idea to go back to school part-time to get a more advanced license.

The price of the Alaska cosmetology license renewal increases to $180 if you miss the deadline.

Cosmetology License Transfer in Alaska

If you want to transfer your cosmetology license from another state, then you’ll need to contact the Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers directly. They review each application on a case-by-case basis.

You must have 1,650 or more training hours from an accredited cosmetology school in your home state in order to be approved for license transfer.

  • If you have a minimum of 1,500 cosmetology school hours from your home state, then you can substitute one year of licensed work experience to make up the missing 150 hours.
  • Or, if you come from your home state with only 1,000 cosmetology school hours, then you can use two years of licensed work experience to equal the missing 650 hours.
  • If you don’t have the number of training hours and work experience listed above, you’ll need to take classes at a cosmetology school in Alaska.
