  • First, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for cosmetologists, hair stylists, and barbers will grow by 13% between 2016 and 2026. In other words, that’s 87,600 new jobs! Comparatively, this is a much faster growth rate than that of other professions.
  • Another beauty specialty with a good job outlook is esthetics. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of new esthetician jobs should grow by 14% between 2016 and 2026. In other words, that’s 8,500 new jobs! This includes electrologists.
  • Just like the growth rate for cosmetologists, hair stylists, and barbers, the employment rate for manicurists is a projected 13% between 2016 and 2026.
  • Now, consider this growth rate: the projected job growth rate for massage therapists is 26% between 2016 and 2026.

How Much Does Beauty School Cost?

Generally speaking, cosmetology school tuition can range from $3,000 to $25,000. Of course, this depends on which school you attend and what type of beauty license you want. For example, New York Cosmetology Schools are much more expensive than cosmetology schools in Michigan. But that’s simply because everything is more expensive in states like New York!

Another factor is state specific cosmetology requirements. Some states charge steep fees for licensure and state board exam registration, while others have comparatively low costs.

Additionally, here are some “hidden” expenses to prepare for:

Less Expensive Beauty School Prices via Alternative Programs

Since the terms “cosmetology school” and “cosmetology license” are rather broad, let’s narrow it down. Basically, a cosmetology program covers everything: hair, skin, and nails. But there are alternatives. While esthetician and cosmetology schools are the most expensive, they are also the longest. In comparison, most states offer licenses for beauty specialties with a narrower focus. Since these specialties are focused on a smaller, more specific areas, the programs tend to be shorter. Obviously, the price of beauty school is typically cheaper if it’s a significantly shorter program!

In order to explore cheaper beauty licenses, consider these options:

  • If you become a manicurist, then you can expect a shorter and less expensive tuition. The nail tech school cost in the United States, on average, ranges from $1,000 to $3,500. (Of course, there are high-end schools that charge much more. But it isn’t important to go to an expensive nail school in order to find a good job. Remember, there will be plenty of manicurist jobs awaiting you after graduation, due to the ever-growing job growth rate!)
  • Another option is getting your barber license. In general, barbering schools cost between $2,000 and $11,500.
  • Yet another shorter beauty school program is makeup artistry. In most states, this specialty falls under the same requirements as either Esthetics or Cosmetology. In that case, the school is just as long, and so is the tuition. However, in some states, less time and money is necessary. For example, Nevada and Louisiana are currently the only two states with separate makeup artistry licenses. But it gets a little more complicated than that, so there are additional states where the beauty school cost is lower for makeup artistry programs.

Financial Aid for Cosmetology School Tuition Assistance

Overall, financial aid for cosmetology school is widespread. This is because a school with accreditation from the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences will have Pell cosmetology grants as well as federal financial aid assistance. Additionally, Stafford Loans are an option for qualified students.

In order to receive Federal Financial Aid, you need to be attending an accredited institution. Even though you usually have to repay Student Federal Loans, they usually ask for small, manageable payments. And, depending on your income level, they may even pardon you for a period of time until you have a well-established foundation.

What is Cosmetology?

Cosmetology is “the study and application of beauty treatment,” according to Wikipedia.  However, that definition barely scratches the surface of what it means to be a cosmetologist. As you probably are aware, there are many different facets to this specialty.  Accordingly, accredited cosmetology training programs prepare students for a truly wide range of tasks.

These include:

  • Hairstyling, cutting, and coloring
  • Manicures, pedicures, and all Nail Technician Responsibilities
  • Makeup Artistry
  • Hair removal via electrolysis, sugaring, waxing, and intense pulsed light
  • Esthetics and skin care procedures (including light massage techniques)

Best Cosmetology Schools in IllinoisIn addition to these beauty techniques, cosmetology courses also focus on business skills and ethics. Additionally, a fair amount of time is spent covering the different types of products that students will need to use throughout their cosmetology career. This includes hair styling gels, makeup, different types of waxes, and much more!

As you can see, cosmetology is a very broad field of study. As a student, you’ll be learning about hair, skin, and nail care. Unsurprisingly,  a cosmetology license is the single beauty license that requires the most training hours. According to the Illinois State Board of Cosmetology, students must complete 1,500 training hours before taking the cosmetology board exam.

Additionally, these training hours must be spread out over a minimum of eight months and last no longer than seven years.

Beauty Careers Similar to Cosmetology in IL

Electrologist: 600 training hours
Esthetics: 750 training hours
Massage Therapist: 500 training hours
Nail Technician: 350 training hours
Hair Braider: 300 training hours

How Much Do Makeup Artists Earn in NYC?

To get a better idea of how much makeup artist careers are worth in NYC, let’s first look at the average makeup artist salary in the United States as a whole.

What is the average makeup artist salary in the United States?

One thing to remember is that the average makeup artist salary depends on the type of makeup artistry. Since makeup artistry licensure falls under different categories according to the different states, there are a few statistics of varying categories across the US:

  • The average salary of Hairdressers, Hairstylists, and Cosmetologists was $30,490.
  • On average, skin care specialists (like estheticians) made a yearly salary of $35,130.

All of these statistics were updated in May 2017.

Now let’s see how salaries in New York compare. The news is good for professional makeup artists in NYC!

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, New York State has the highest employment level in this occupation.
  • Furthermore, New York is the 3rd highest paying state for makeup artists, falling just behind Illinois and the District of Columbia.
  • In contrast to the national statistics, the average salary of makeup artists in New York is $77,980.

How to Become a Freelance Makeup Artist

If you’re wondering how to become a freelance makeup artist, then you’re in the right place.  A freelance makeup artist is simply a licensed beautician who applies makeup on a freelance basis, instead of working for a company.

This post includes a step-by-step guide, recommendations for the best makeup schools, and all of the basic background info you need to be a freelance make up artist.  Check out the table of contents below to find out exactly what you’re looking for.

How to Become a Freelance Makeup Artist
The 3 Steps

In this section, we’ll cover the basics steps to becoming a freelance makeup artist. Being a freelancer is hard work. So, it pays to do your due diligence while you’re building a foundation!

#1. Determine Your State Requirements for Makeup Artist Certification

In most states, there isn’t a specific “makeup artist license.” Instead, this falls under the category of a Cosmetology License or an Esthetician License.

Therefore, you should visit your state board of cosmetology’s website to determine the most appropriate license for you. Even though you get to make most of the rules as a freelance makeup artist, it’s illegal to work as a professional makeup artist without a license. Even if you’re freelancing.

#2. Complete a Cosmetology or Esthetician Training Program

How to Become a Freelance Makeup Artist

Find an accredited cosmetology training program near you, and start taking makeup classes. Since you’re interested mostly in makeup application, choose schools that emphasize makeup artistry.

Make sure to look at the various course offerings, as some beauty schools have more in-depth makeup classes than others.

In order to find a makeup school near you, enter your information into the search bar below. This tool is safe, and it will provide you with a customized list of the best makeup schools near you.

#3. Pass the State Board Exam and Get Your License

After completing the required length of makeup school for your state, it’s time to pass the state board exam for cosmetology. Typically, this involves a written segment and a practical (hands-on) segment.

Once you pass the test, you’re golden! You can now start working as a licensed freelance makeup artist.

Just remember to renew your license as required by your state board. This is usually every 1-4 years. As a heads up, make sure to check whether or not your state has continuing education requirements. Some states require you to take continuing ed courses during the renewal period.

4 Insider Freelance Makeup Artist Tips

In the previous section, we covered the basic steps for how to become a freelance makeup artist. However, those were just the bare bones. In reality, being a freelancer (in any field) requires more effort than a traditional job. The following are some steps beyond the minimum that you can take to set yourself apart.

#1. Get Experience as a Makeup Artist

The reason freelancers become successful is that they work hard to build a good reputation for themselves. Before going out on your own, we suggest gaining experience by working in salons. You can also gain experience by working at retail makeup counters. (And have a ton of fun while doing so!)

This will help you build up your clientele. Over time, people will start to ask just for you. When it’s time for you to break off as a freelance makeup artist, you’ll have loyal clients who are ready to follow you.

#2. Create a Portfolio & Website

In addition to gaining experience, you should build up a professional portfolio. This can be as simple as keeping before and after photos in a binder. However, we recommend building a portfolio online and eventually getting your own business cards. Everything professional has a website these days, so it’s important to show your professionalism to others. A business card is a great way to tactfully get the word out in your day-to-day conversations.

#3. Spend Time Creating a Killer Beauty Kit

While you’re gaining experience, spend time creating the best beauty kit possible. Your personal toolkit can make or break you, so make sure you’ve researched the best tools and products to use. (You’ll learn a lot about this in makeup school, as well as during your work experience.)

Your makeup kit doesn’t have to be extremely expensive. In fact, there are many excellent budget options on Amazon that are great for freelance makeup artists on a budget!
#4. Stay Current

Make it a point to keep learning. You can learn from taking makeup artist classes online, and also by going back to school. Another way to keep learning is to simply watch free makeup classes on YouTube.

Since the industry is always changing, you need to be on top of it. And as a freelance makeup artist – you guessed it – you’ve got to be better than the rest. Your livelihood depends on it!

Do You Have What it Takes to Become a Freelance Makeup Artist?

In order to be a freelance makeup artist, you have to possess certain skills. And they need to be strong. The good news is that you can always work on improving yourself. In fact, we recommend staying current on tips for freelancers in general.

The following are the most important traits of a freelance makeup artist:

Freelance Makeup Artist Tips

  • Rock solid organizational skills: It takes a lot of organization to flawlessly juggle your own schedule and your clients’ needs.
  • Strong work ethic: As a freelancer, you are your own boss. This can be amazing, but it means you must have a rock solid work ethic.
  • Entrepreneurial knowledge: You will be a business owner of your freelance business. Therefore, you should read up on how to be a kick-ass entrepreneur. This should be a regular part of your practice.
  • Tech savvy: Since you’ll need to market yourself through your website and social media, being tech-savvy is a must.

The Truth About Makeup Artist School Online

There is a time and a place for makeup artist school online. And a time to stay far, far away.

The truth is, makeup artistry is a trade best learned in person. Yes, you can upload photos online. And yes, you can get real feedback from instructors through online makeup classes.

But the truth is that every state’s cosmetology state boards want you to have a makeup artist license, rather than a certification. So, if you truly want a makeup artist career, you should consider searching for and attending a makeup school with classroom instruction and salon experience. If you do this, then you’ll have a much easier career and probably will earn more money.

The only exception to this is for freelance makeup artists. If you want excellent continuing education, then online makeup artist school might be the perfect fit for you! It’s a great way to keep your skills sharp and help you attract new clients.

While the makeup artist schools in the next section all do great things, we wouldn’t be doing our due diligence without showing you at least one video like the one below.

What Does a Special Effects Makeup Artist Do?

Since you’re reading about the best special effects makeup schools, it’s probably safe to assume that you have some idea of what special effects makeup artists do. However, here’s a quick recap:

When you hear “professional make up artist,” it’s typical to imagine someone who uses makeup to cause others to look more beautiful…. But that’s not the case with special effects makeup artistry. (It’s also sometimes called prosthetic makeup.)

Special effects makeup artists use makeup to make their clients look terrifying, ragged, or non-human. Usually, this is for positions in plays or movies.

Roles & Duties of a Special Effects Makeup Artist

  • Use makeup to make actors and actresses faces have bruises, look much older, beat up, or have cuts
  • Design monsters from prosthetics and cosmetics
  • Work with the special effects department and the costume department to create a seamless out-of-this-world look for a character

In other words, a special effects make up artist transforms regular humans into magnificent mythological creatures or horrifying monsters.

Video: How Movie Monsters Are Made

In the video below, special effects makeup artist Howard Berger explains how he creates movie monsters. This movie makeup tutorial includes insider tips on creating larger-than-life characters on screen.

How to Become a Special Effects Makeup Artist

#1. In order to become a special effects makeup artist, you should first identify the best special effects makeup schools nearest you. However, the top beauty schools with special effects makeup artistry programs are often higher quality in large cities. Therefore, you might be building a stronger resume if you’re willing to travel to a large city, such as LA or NYC. There, you’d be right in the thick of it, working with the movie stars.

#2. The next step is to focus on standing out from the rest of your peers. Because when you graduate, competition will be tough. You’ll want to have a portfolio showcasing some pretty outstanding makeup artistry when you’re looking for jobs.

#3. Often, special effects make up artists work as freelancers, especially right after graduation. During this “newbie” period, they find jobs at local theaters, fashion shows, or even as “regular” make up artists.

It’s important not to be discouraged when you’re just starting out. Even if you’re not working behind the movie scenes yet, this is the perfect time to work on building up an impressive portfolio and resume.

It’s also a good time to network as much as possible, since who you know can play a big role in landing good jobs.

Hard work and perseverance pay off. Keep working, seek extra training courses for prosthetic makeup in your spare time, and stay true to your dream of becoming a special FX makeup artist.

#4. After working to establish yourself, continue to apply for special effects makeup jobs that sound exciting to you. The best is yet to come!

All in all, there are 41 states that issue licenses for makeup artistry. Of those 41, two have specific makeup artist licenses. (Nevada and Louisiana.)

In the other 39 states, the cosmetology boards have differently named licenses. However, these licenses encompass makeup artist licensure.

What’s the difference between makeup certification vs license?

Generally speaking, you should have an actual makeup artist license if you’re a practicing makeup artist. A makeup artist license comes from rigorous training, which you can find from your results from the “makeup schools near me” search tool.

These cosmetology training programs educate you far beyond makeup artistry. For example, you’ll learn the science behind cosmetology, safety procedures, and a lot of skin and hair care techniques. This is why a makeup artist license opens the doors to more high paying career opportunities.

Comparatively, a makeup certification is a lesser type of training. Again, a specific “makeup artist certification” doesn’t officially exist in most states. Makeup certification courses will educate you on makeup application, but they won’t go much further.

How much does it cost to become a makeup artist?

The mean cost of becoming a makeup artist is about $169 in licensing test and application fees. However, it’s different in every state. That is just the average. Check out state by state requirements here.

How long does makeup artist school take?

On average, certified makeup courses run for about 134 days. After that, makeup artist students must pass their state board exams in order to be licensed in their home state. Expect to pay a little bit out of pocket for the licensing and testing fees. As stated above, that average cost is $169. Depending on your state, it may be more or less.

Since different states cover makeup artistry under various certifications, you’ll need to check your home state’s cosmetology state requirements for exact numbers. Here are some great examples from makeupartistedu.org that show how wide and varied the requirements can be:
